The communities we serve are among the most
vulnerable in the country and are home to some of the
most dire statistics relating to educational attainment,
employment, literacy rates, and attendance rates.
We’ve discovered that giving back, making a difference,
and coming together to acknowledge success is
contagious. Our community does not stop at just good
enough.

Born in the Dominican Republic, Hector immigrated to the Bronx as a child. Entering high school, he lost focus, started hanging out with the wrong crowd, and cut classes. “I didn’t see the motive of working towards a high school diploma.” His mother realized he was skipping school and sent him to the DR to work on the farm. While picking crops in the blazing sun, he realized the importance of a good education.
He returned to the Bronx with a new perspective on life and enrolled in an East Side House (ESH) high school. “The people from ESH, they care about you. They make you feel supported… and they want you to excel.”
ESH placed Hector in an internship at New York Life. Wearing a suit to his internship made him feel like a businessman and focus more on school. “I definitely see the world differently because of ESH…”
He graduated high school and earned a Bachelor’s degree from University of Rochester.
Hector founded Don Carvajal Café, a local coffee roasting company that sources ethical and eco-friendly coffee beans worldwide. Their coffee can be found in over 60 NYC grocery stores and now Hector has his eyes set on opening his own shop.
“Once you get help from ESH, you feel like you can excel and go far because of the potential you see in yourself.”
For most of her life, negativity surrounded
her; as a child of immigrants, she gave into
the unfortunate stereotype that she was
lesser and that society did not expect much
from her. She stopped caring about school or
learning, “my school didn’t seem to think I
mattered, so it stopped mattering to me.”
Yessenia gave in to peer pressure as she
started hanging around the wrong crowd
and began to experiment with drugs. Then
reality set in when her school told her she
wouldn’t graduate and they couldn’t help her
anymore. Yessenia then discovered she was
two months pregnant and would be a
mother! She felt hopeless until an East Side
House advisor helped her enroll in a program
that would allow her to obtain a high school
diploma.
Yessenia genuinely felt the staff cared for her and started looking forward to
attending school each day. The student receiving failing grades was now passing with
flying colors! Not only did she obtain her high school diploma, but attended Hostos Community College while placing her daughter in ESH’s Early Childhood education
program. After graduating from Hostos, she went to Lehman College to become a Social Worker. Then went on to further serve her community by becoming a Police Officer.
Once a student who gave up on herself and felt tossed aside by the system now serves young adults in similar situations. Yessenia is an inspiration, and we are excited to see her achieve continued success!
